Unhandled Error

I was saddened to read that our friend Tom had been subject to some saliva which caused beeping. The setter in question was probably swept away by how much fun Tom was being as he ran on*. An ineffectual owner is a curse in situations like this.
Anyway it set me thinking in my special collie way of how humans could all do a bit more thinking sometimes...
*Setters take an awful lot of outrunning, Tom, thumbs up!

Your canine perspective is most helpful. I tend to think the best thing to do is to run on in the hope that:
1. the dog will get bored
2. the owner will assert some control
3. if it's got really short legs, I might outrun it
What would you advise?

Hi Tom,
My advice? Well, no dog (except the very overweight labs) will EVER grow bored of a running game - we love 'em! Plus, even if the dog has short enough legs for you outrun it, there's always a chance that it has alerted other dogs to the tremendous game it's got started with you. It's unlikely that you will outrun them all.
It's the owners, of course. And here's the conundrum: the hardest time to get through to a dog is when it is having great fun, or scared witless. You may even find that some owners consider that you are doing them a favour by exercising their dog to the point it will spend the rest of the day asleep, leaving them in peace. I don't advise remonstrating with the owners (this is like criticising children).
I think the best course of action is to get your own dog. This way you can use your own faithful friend to distract the salivating watch-botherers, whilst you stride on unimpeded.
If there's anything else I can help with, let me know.
